Melissa Sterry talks about wildfires and why they are not quite as bad as they seem. Design scientist and systems theorist Melissa Sterry is recognised as a world leading authority on the science, technology and thinking that could help build a brighter future. A design practice graduate, her career has been spent exploring the potentialities inherent in new and emerging ideas and innovations in fields including architecture, utilities, manufacturing, communications, media, publishing, events, arts, and fashion. A recipient of several national and international innovation, creativity and enterprise awards, including the Mensa Education and Research Foundation International Award for enhancing intelligence that benefits society, Melissa is listed in the 'Libertine 100’ women with complex, beautiful and potentially world-changing ideas. Published in more than 60 trade, academic, and consumer titles worldwide, and a participant of numerous scientific, design, and sustainability panels, juries, and committees, she is known for providing deep insight and informed critique at multiple scales of concept research and development. Her academic activities include visiting lecturer, visiting fellow, workshop host, thesis supervisor, and guest critic at several leading architecture and design research institutes. Currently completing a PhD at the Advanced Virtual and Technological Architecture Research group at University of Greenwich, her hypotheses translate biotic behaviours, relationships and systems that enable resilience into theoretical and practice modes, models, and metaphors for future urban environments.
