The History of a Segregated Mental Health Asylum (Mental Health Mondays)

The Crownsville State Hospital in Maryland was built in the early 1900s to address the growing number of Black residents struggling with mental illness. The facility was segregated for decades, with overcrowded Black patients coping with terrible living conditions and abuse from all-white staff. Later decades saw attempts of reform, but the troubled legacy of the asylum lives on.
