Dr. Heather Irobunda joins us today to talk about the alarming Black maternal health crisis in the United States. Black mothers are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes compared to white mothers. Dr. Irobunda talks to us about the systemic issues Black mothers face, such as lack of access to quality healthcare and structural racism in medicine. She highlights the “health deserts” many women across the country live in and how that impacts maternal mortality rates. Dr Irobunda talks to us about the importance of creating a culturally competent healthcare system. We talk about the importance of educating yourself on social issues and advocating for change.
