“That’s not in the budget” has become her favorite thing to say! As a financial literacy advocate, I focus on the foundation of your finances and wealth, your budget! Through Black Girl Budget I have created a community that centers on alternative and exciting ways for black women, specifically, to think about and interact with their finances. Black Girl Budget is invested in educating black women on how to use their money as a strategic tool to generate wealth and assets. All while on a budget! Interestingly enough, I did not become fully engaged with finances, wealth, and budgeting until I graduated from law school in 2016. I had only racked up about $30,000 in student loan debt from undergrad, but the student loans I took out for law school were three times as much. My first job as a lawyer was with the government so I was not making what most people consider “lawyer” money. The first student loan bill I received had a minimum payment of $1,500 a month. I laughed because I obviously could not afford it, but in that moment I also decided to get rid of all of my debt. I created a budget that allowed me to send $300 - $700 a month toward my debts and pay off a number of student loans and credit cards. After sharing what I was able to accomplish with my friends, family and insta-friends, the idea of paying off loans became realistic for others. I begin to receive questions surrounding the basics of finances and recognized that a space for people, specifically black women, to ask questions and discuss finances was necessary.
