Anchor into Jesus!

Hebrews 2:1 For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. The author had a reason in mind for why he and his readers must pay closer attention to what they had heard about Jesus from God. In 1:4 the Holy Spirit gave the reason for us to pay close attention to what God has said of His Son. Jesus has inherited a more excellent name than the angels. From 1:5-14, we learn what God spoke about His Son that proves His greatness and gives us great confidence to believe in Him for salvation—He is the anointed One sent into this world to save God’s people. For this reason, we must pay closer attention to what God has said about Jesus than about the angels. What has been said has been heard, for it is written. It is for our greatest good to make sure we don’t drift away from it. The image here is that of a boat being carried by the flow of the current away from the dock. It’s a ship without an anchor. The positive point of the author is this: Anchor into who Jesus is (God’s Son), what Jesus is (our high priest), what He has done (made purification for sins), where Jesus is (at God’s right hand), His excellent name (Son of God), His character (loves righteousness), and God’s promise (to subdue all of His and our enemies). To anchor into Jesus is to do something with each of these foundational truths about Jesus. From this anchored position, we love with Him. He’s our source, our peace, our refuge, our confidence, our righteousness, our savior, and our hope. If we drift from this reality, we have nothing, for apart from Jesus, He said we can do nothing to display His fruit (John 15:5). But with Him, we can do all things. We can love whoever He puts in our paths, for His glory.
