Hebrews 2:2-3 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every transgression and disobedience received a just penalty, how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? After it was at the first spoken through the Lord, it was confirmed to us by those who heard, We have the author’s continued reason for not drifting away from what God has said about His Son, Jesus Christ. Indeed, God did speak to His people in times past through angels. As I’ve said before, the Jews considered the Law, the Torah, to be spoken through angels. That word, the Law, clearly articulated how every transgression or disobedience was to be punished. The punishment proved that the Law was unalterable. The penalties established the Law of God. Here’s the encouragement. First the bad news. We have all transgressed the Law of God. Every time we have not loved God with all our hearts and every time we have not loved a person God put in our paths is a transgression of God’s word spoken through the angels. Death has been assigned by God as the penalty for every transgression and disobedience. It is unalterable. How shall we escape the death penalty? God has provided only one means of salvation from the penalty we deserve. It is through His Son, Jesus Christ. He made purification for sins by coming in the flesh to bear every breach of the Law by His people because He loves righteousness and hates lawlessness. As a result of His saving work, God has given Him the most excellent name above every name. Through Him, we have forgiveness of sins and are justifiably free from the penalty of the Law. What a great salvation! The encouragement in verses 1-2 of chapter 2 is to neglect the word of God through the angels or the word of God spoken in Jesus Christ. In Christ, we are saved from our inability to love and our hostility toward God. We are saved from all of His and our enemies as we hold fast to what God has said and anchor into Jesus. If you are intentionally living for the purpose of loving with Jesus, then you won’t neglect this great salvation. Instead, you will hold fast to Him and express His love in this dark world. As we love, we declare God’s great salvation of sinners.
