John 1:47-48 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to Him, “How do You know me?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Did you notice what Jesus did to draw Nathanael? Jesus’ comment revealed that Jesus knew him to some degree that was important to Nathanael. This encourages me in how I might love like He loves—be attentive to people, notice important things about them. For instance, I’ve noticed that if I remember someone’s name after first meeting them and call them by name within the first minutes, it shows that I care. Noticing their name on a name tag and calling them by name makes the encounter more personal. Jesus remarked that Nathanael was a man of integrity, which took the encounter to a personal level. There seems to be a supernatural element to this encounter with Nathanael. It’s difficult to know for sure whether Nathanael was within eyesight of Jesus when Philip “found” him. Nevertheless, I think when we are living to love with Jesus, expecting Him to love whoever He puts in our paths, we can expect a supernatural attentiveness and insight. I remember walking into the Brave to Love ministry offices. It is a ministry in South Africa dedicated to rescuing women from sex trafficking. I initially felt awkward about this opportunity because, as you probably know, my ministry has primarily been to men. However, the Holy Spirit reminded me that Jesus was the one loving them. I simply needed to go, receive, and give what I was given by the Holy Spirit. It was a supernatural encounter. The Lord reminded me that they had been treated as objects, and He wanted to show their value as persons by simply caring enough to remember their names as I met them, and as soon as possible, call them by name—often. I asked about their stories and the history of the ministry and then gave glory to the Lord for His grace to them. I don’t know the full impact of that meeting that day; however, when I returned the next year to present a Live to Love conference, some of the staff and girls attended the conference. I would like to think that they experienced the love of Jesus, which drew them to have an interest in a future encounter. The encouragement I am hoping to give you today from this verse is that as you live to love with Jesus, you can expect the Holy Spirit to give you a supernatural concern and care for people, which He will then use to draw them to Christ. They may not know it’s the love of God, or they might. That’s part of the live to love with Jesus adventure. We love with Jesus, experience his love and concern for others, and watch Him work as He draws people to follow Him. The Holy Spirit can give us a personal knowledge of people as He helps us be attentive to them. I invite you to become a partner in our ministry. Would you pray about becoming a regular supporter of Elijah Ministries and the Live to Love with Jesus ministry? I hope you will receive the joy and benefit of “giving it forward,” so others may receive encouragement to turn their hearts to God and to live to love with Jesus.
