Hebrews 9:26 Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. If Jesus had not entered into the holy place in heaven, then He would have needed to suffer from the foundation of the world to cover sin. But since He has entered into the heavenly Holy of Holies, in the presence of God, with His own blood, once for all, for all time, we can see that sin has been put away. God has put sin out of court, to speak in legal terms. Sin has no standing before God to condemn us or hinder our relationship with God. The author considered the first century as the “consummation of the ages.” The image is of God gathering together all of the ages of history and showing Jesus’ one purpose in relation to them—to take upon Himself all of the sin committed by God’s people in the ages in which they lived. What an awesome picture of God’s work in Christ. I encourage you today with the power of Jesus’ sacrifice. It has the power to put away all of your sin. These ideas are in the Greek word translated put away. Sin has been laid down before God. And because of Jesus’ sacrifice, which redeemed and paid the debt owed by God’s people, God has moved sin aside, pushed it out of the way, and rejected it as evidence in His court of divine justice. In legal terms, He has determined that sin has no standing in His court. It has no voice before the judge. Sin has been silenced. Now what does your conscience say to this? You are not the judge. You are the defendant. The judge has declared that you are just in His sight. You may stand at His throne and ask for anything you wish to bring Him glory and to express His love. His grace and peace will not be withheld, and your request will not be refused. Such is the encouragement we derive from this verse. Take a moment and enter into the presence of God in the heavenlies. Behold with awe as God dismisses all of the sin with which Satan accuses you. He tells our adversary at law that he has no case and that the case is dropped, put away, once and for all. Your case has been declared a mistrial for lack of evidence and proof of guilt. What are you feeling? What will you say to your advocate, your counselor, who has defended you and has acted on your behalf so effectively? What is His service worth to you? Does He give you an invoice with His charges? No! How do you feel when He tells you there is no charge for His defense and representation? What do you say when He adds that His costs were covered by the judge? Put yourself in that place, and say what’s on your heart, because that’s where you stand every day. Then walk out of that court to live to love with Jesus because you are free.
