Hebrews 12:26-27 And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven.” This expression, “Yet once more,” denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. When Moses called the people to Mt. Sinai to give them the words of God, it was an earthshaking event. Ex. 19:18. “Now Mount Sinai was wrapped in smoke because the LORD had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly.” According to the Holy Spirit, the incredible display on and in the mountain was to heighten their sensibilities to the importance of the message. It was to impress on them the seriousness of ignoring His word, producing the fear of the Lord. These verses are a commentary of the Holy Spirit on Haggai 2:6-7, which recalled to the minds of his audience the initial giving of the Law and the first covenant. Haggai prophesied of another time when God would speak, and the importance of the message would be exponentially greater. Much more would be shaken than one single mountain. I read Ps. 50:1-2 a few days ago. “The Mighty One, God, the Lord, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to where it sets. From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth.” From Mt. Sinai, just the nation of Israel was summoned. From Zion, the heavenly city, everyone on earth is summoned to listen and obey. The author remembered Haggai’s reference to the word of the Lord prophesying of the very time in which the author and his readers were living. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The time in which the original audience and we live has been promised. God has spoken in His Son, Jesus Christ, and calls everyone to pay attention to His words, He has shaken the entire earth and the heavens. Nothing in this world is stable. God said to Jesus, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end” (Heb. 1:10-12). When His blood was finally spilled, it spoke! The earth shook, the veil in the temple was torn from top to bottom, and even the graves were opened and the dead were resurrected by the power of that word. Just before turning Himself over to be crucified, told His disciples, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Do you get it? From the time Jesus came, the entire world system has been shaking at the sound of the gospel, calling men and women to repent of seeking life in this unstable, shaking world, and to come to God through His blood to receive an eternal kingdom. God is filling His house with glory as He shakes us out of the nations into His kingdom of love. He is shaking everything on earth to gather His people for glory.
