Hebrews 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going. Today and tomorrow we will be encouraged by the faith of Abraham. It is implied that faith came when God called Abraham. The call of God, working with the Spirit of God, reveals the righteousness of God for Abraham. When God commanded Abraham to leave his home country and people and go to a land that God would show him, the Holy Spirit gave Abraham the power to believe. God’s call to Abraham is found in Genesis 12:1-3. Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you; and I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great; and so you shall be a blessing; and I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Notice the “I wills” in these verses. There are five, which told Abraham that God would be with him and that He would give him an inheritance. Typically, an inheritance or blessing comes from the father to the son. So when God asked Abe to leave his father’s house, he basically was saying to him, “I will be a father to you.” The point of the author was that the faith that God gave Abraham was an assurance or proof to Abe that God would keep His word. He believed God was with him, so he obeyed with nothing more than faith that God was with him and would show him where to go and what to do. Throughout Abraham’s journey, he had to keep reminding himself of God’s call and promises. The encouragement we are to receive from Abraham today is that we also are to remember God’s call and promises to us. He is our father. He has called us to leave everything and live to love with His Son, Jesus Christ, who is with us and will guide us by His Spirit. We must remind ourselves as we journey with Jesus that He will bless us and give us everything we need to obey Him and glorify Him. We are His, so His name is at stake. Each day of our journey, we go out, not knowing what God has planned for us or who God is going to put in our paths. However, we do have the Lord’s promise. “I will never leave you or forsake you. I will be with you always, even to the end of the age”, the aion, which you’ll remember from verse 3; we believe God prepared it for us by His word. Therefore, dear friends, let us, like Abraham, obey His call to live to love with Jesus, believing He will give us what He promises, grace and mercy, as we need it. Thank you for listening.
