The believer’s security

Hebrews 7:22-24 so much the more also Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant. The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. As the author continued explaining the authority of Jesus to serve as God’s priest in the holy, heavenly sanctuary, there was more to say. Not only will God never change His mind regarding the authority of Jesus’ ministry before Him, but those who trust in Jesus and draw near to God through Him have a better guarantee or agent of security than those who tried to relate to God on the temporary authority of the Law. The priests who served on the basis of physical requirements were limited by death, so God appointed the entire tribe of Levi to keep up the intercession for the people for generations until Jesus came. His coming signaled the end of their service because Jesus established a better covenant with an unfailing, enduring hope of fulfillment. Since He conquered death, all who believe in Him have eternal security. It will never change, and therefore worshippers may have confidence to enter into relationship with God forever through Him. Remember what the author wrote in 5:14? “But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.” That’s how we learn to obey the author’s command, on the authority of the Holy Spirit, to draw near to the throne of grace with confidence when we need mercy and grace to help. We should obey and draw near because we perceive, by the grace of the Holy Spirit, the good to come, namely God’s glory, by our drawing near. And we also learn how evil it is not to! If we are to mature, God must give us practice in training our senses through suffering and testing. These true things are meaningful only if we do something with them. If we believe that Jesus’ presence before God is our salvation and our security, our guarantee that God will accept us and give us the grace we need to glorify Him by loving with Jesus, then we practice abiding in Him as much of the day as we possibly can. We draw near to God through Him and hold fast to this hope. Let’s not be like babies who are only secure when there’s no mess and they feel comfy and cuddled by God. We have the guarantee of better things than temporary, personal comfort and happiness on earth. In Jesus Christ, we have access to God’s peace, love, and joy forever. Let’s live like it! Overflowing with His life and the fullness of grace that He guarantees.
