Hebrews 11:29 By faith they passed through the Red Sea as though they were passing through dry land; and the Egyptians, when they attempted it, were drowned. What made it possible for the people of Israel to pass through the Red Sea on dry land? We see from this verse that it was by the faith God gave them that the sea stood up for them to pass through. But when the Egyptians attempted to pass through, it is implied that they couldn’t because they had no faith in God. We are all going to come up against barriers in our relationships with others. Faced with the impossible, their backs up against the sea, and having no way of escape, Moses cried out to the Lord (Ex. 14:13-16). But Moses said to the people, “Do not fear! Stand by and see the salvation of the LORD which He will accomplish for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you will never see them again forever. The LORD will fight for you while you keep silent.” Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to Me? Tell the sons of Israel to go forward. As for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it, and the sons of Israel shall go through the midst of the sea on dry land.” Moses and the people believed God and walked forward as Moses lifted up his staff. The author was encouraging his readers to believe God is for them and is prepared to deliver them when threatened by their enemies. When things look impossible, draw near to God, and He will fight for you. He will deliver you for His name's sake. As we know from 10:32-34, his encouragement wasn’t irrelevant to his Hebrew readers. They endured a great conflict of sufferings. Some of you may feel hopelessly pinned in or surrounded by the enemy. You are not without hope because of faith. God isn’t asking you to muster up enough faith to deliver yourself. No, He wants you to recognize the assurance and confidence you may have because you believe in Him and His provision of access to the throne of grace through His Son. You didn’t believe by mustering up faith. God’s Spirit cleansed your conscience by faith (Acts 15:9) as you looked to Jesus for eternal life when you heard the gospel. At that time, the faith and love of Christ were born in you to assure you that when you face enemies in this world, you may walk forward with confidence. Jesus has raised His staff, His strong scepter, over every enemy you have so that God may be glorified as you pass through it on the dry land of His grace. The love of Christ flows out of those who look to Him. He is able to preserve you forever because He ever lives to intercede for you (Heb. 7:25). So walk with purpose today to glorify God by trusting Him and loving with Him. He will bring you through and will also overthrow your enemies.
