Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he would not see death; and he was not found because God took him up; for he obtained the witness that before his being taken up he was pleasing to God. Today, Enoch’s life encourages us. Here’s the testimony of Enoch from Gen. 5:23-24. “So all the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” He was here on earth one minute and then gone the next. The Spirit of God simply says, “He was not.” This verse testifies with Gen. 5:24 that he couldn’t be found because God took him up to heaven. We learn from this verse also that Enoch was pleasing to God. He knew it, as did those around him, because (here’s that same word martureo) he was given an assurance from God, a testimony of faith. God spared Enoch from the experience of death as a witness to all of the subsequent history of mankind that the way someone knows they are right with God is through the faith He gives them. Furthermore, because it was God testifying, and not a faith that Enoch generated, his faith endured to the end of his life. Enoch walked with God until God took him. This is one of the reasons the author highlighted the work of God in this great cloud of witnesses. Remember in 10:36 he wrote, “For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.” We are encouraged by the examples in this chapter to keep on drawing near to God with confidence that we will receive the grace promised to those who do so. God promises the grace to receive well what He places in our paths, whether blessing or storm, and the grace to trust and love well as we walk with God as Enoch did. So I encourage you today to walk with God by the faith He has given you. Do the will of God, which is to love with Jesus those He puts in your path. Consider how you might encourage others to love and good deeds for the glory of God. Please join me in prayer. Father, thank You for another day of life to know and love You and live to love with Jesus. Thank you also for the faith that You have given me to walk with You. Anoint and fill me with the Holy Spirit, the presence and power of Christ, so that I can love and trust You, and love those You put in my path today for Your glory. Amen.
