We know a child of God does not continue in sin.

1 John 5:18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. In this verse, the apostle John stated clearly three undeniable realities that he wanted the church to remember. In vs. 18-20, joining with the believers, he wrote, “We know.” These truths are beyond question in light of who Jesus Christ is, what He has done, and what He is doing. The first statement has to do with recognizing and discerning those who are truly born of God. We know that no one who is born of God continually, habitually, practices sin. He wasn’t saying that the children of God don’t ever sin. He’s already made that clear in chapter 1, vs. 10. “If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.” The verb tense John used signifies a continuous, intentional, habitual action. We know that having the indwelling Christ is incompatible with habitual, unrestrained sinning. John introduced the reason for this conclusion with a contrasting conjunction, to emphasize the impossibility of a true believer continuing in sin. John strengthened the reality of this truth by describing both the believer and Jesus as begotten of God. Rom. 8:29 comes to mind where Paul referred to Jesus as the first-born among many brethren. Since both Jesus and the children of God were of God, Jesus keeps, guards, or watches over all of God’s children. He doesn’t let the evil one touch them. Touch seems a little weak for what the Greek word means. Hapto suggests more than a touch. It means to fasten on to, to lay hold of, or to snatch. Remember what Jesus said in John 10:27-29? My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch (a form of the same verb) them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. The children of God have a divine protector in Christ. Here’s the connection to living to love. Can you imagine someone who is living to love with Jesus, (intentionally abiding in His life, drawing from His life like the branches draw life from the vine), can you imagine the evil one taking him away from Jesus to live to sin? Unthinkable! This we know. Every child of God is safe and secure forever. They live with Jesus to express His love. It’s in their DNA. So live your life today with confidence in Jesus. If you don’t have that confidence, have you truly believed in Jesus Christ as the Son of God? Have you surrendered your life in this world to God, trusting only in the work of Christ for the forgiveness of your sins? If not, there’s no better time than now to repent of living for yourself and give yourself to God to live to love with Jesus for His glory.
