Hebrews 7:11 Now if perfection was through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the people received the Law), what further need was there for another priest to arise according to the order of Melchizedek, and not be designated according to the order of Aaron? The author stated in chapter 6, vs. 1, that he wanted his readers to press on to maturity. The Greek word used for maturity was teleiotes, and the Greek word used for perfection in this verse was teleiosis. You can see or hear the similarities, can’t you? They are forms of the same root word communicating the ideas of completion, perfection, or maturity. His main point was that the first priesthood obviously wasn’t able to perfect the worshiper or bring him to maturity or completion. If it were, there would be no need for another priest of a different order, like Melchizedek, to fulfill God’s promise and purpose. The Levitical priests and the Law could not present worshippers as complete, mature, or perfect. So, God provided His Son, not only to perform what we needed to be justified before Him but also to apply His perfected justifying work to our lives until we stand blameless and spotless before Him in glory. As Paul wrote to the Philippians in 1:6. “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” We are going to learn in vs. 25 of this chapter that Jesus lives now to bring His work on the cross to maturity, to completion, by interceding for us and saving us to the “uttermost.” We live today by and through the life of Jesus Christ, who has been designated as our priest forever and who is interceding for us every moment of our lives. We don’t need to be afraid that we won’t be able to love anyone—no matter what they do. We will endure to the end of our lives walking in love with Christ. How do we know we will? Because that state of perfection doesn’t depend on our strength and wisdom, but on His faithfully performing the office of the priest of the Most High God. Our love for others flows out of His life and intercession for us! Think on Him until your heart sees the glorious beauty of His work and promises. Doesn’t that encourage you?!
