Hebrews 9:8-9a The Holy Spirit is signifying this, that the way into the holy place has not yet been disclosed while the outer tabernacle is still standing, which is a symbol for the present time. The author showed his view of inspiration by saying that God, the Holy Spirit, is present tense, signifying something. The Holy Spirit is signifying how the old covenant is to be applied. By the very order of things in the old covenant, the Holy Spirit is telling us something. What’s He saying? By the very presence or standing of the first tabernacle, in effect, blocking the way into the Holy of Holies, the Holy Spirit is saying there’s a time coming when there will be no hindrances to access to God and His glory. The present time is the time of history when the tabernacle has standing before God. It’s the time of the old covenant, which prepares the way for the new covenant. The outer tabernacle has standing, or a place in divine worship, as long as the symbol is needed. In other words, the copy has a purpose as long as the original hasn’t arrived. But once the original comes, there’s no need for the symbol or the copy to remain. It loses its standing, loses its place. Here’s the Holy Spirit’s and the author’s point. The way into the Holy of Holies has been disclosed. Jesus is the way into the Holy of Holies. Access to God and His glory is here! There’s so much more to say as to the significance of what the author said, and he will unpack it in the following verses, so I don’t want to get ahead of myself. This verse begs the questions, “Are we in tune with what the Holy Spirit is speaking or signifying when we read about Jesus in the Bible? Are we satisfied with symbols of God’s love and presence when He Himself is accessible? Are we more in love with the forms of religion than with Jesus Christ, Himself? Are we making much of the shadows and copies of the kingdom of God? If so, we are giving the symbols, copies, and shadows more standing in our hearts than God Himself. That makes them idols. Idols are powerless and have no ability to produce glory to God. Jeremiah spoke of this idolatrous mindset when He wrote, “Be appalled, O heavens, at this, and shudder, be very desolate,” declares the LORD. “For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, to hew for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that can hold no water.” Now that Jesus has come into the world, the fountain of living waters is available to God’s people. Every shadow, copy, or substitute has become obsolete, old, and broken. Like the first or outer tabernacle blocked the way to the Holy of Holies, so religious objects and forms, which are symbols, block the way to God and His glory. The Holy Spirit is speaking. Do you hear Him? Do you understand? Beloved, believers, you are the tabernacle of God in this world. The curtains should be pulled back so that everyone God puts in our paths may walk right into the tabernacle of God and experience His love. Jesus dwells in our bodies, His tabernacle. Our lives are not a symbol or a copy. Maybe you can think of it this way. God has made our hearts, our spirits, the Holy of Holies on the earth. The Holy Spirit is signifying that Jesus lives. He is in the Father. You are in Him, and He is in you (John 14:20).
