Britain has relinquished its last colony in Africa, signing a deal with Mauritius that cedes the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands. But it will be allowed to maintain a highly strategic joint American-British military base on one of the islands for the next century, something its five eyes partners, including Australia have welcomed.
