Fresh concerns for Moldova amid Ukraine-Moscow peace talks

Radio National Breakfast — Separate stories podcast - Een podcast door ABC listen

The possibility of a peace deal between Ukraine and Moscow has triggered new concerns in neighbouring Moldova,  which has long been fearful of becoming Russia's next military target. Former Moldovan intelligence chief Iurii Briceag has told the Kyiv Independent newspaper that if Ukraine is forced to give up substantial territory to Moscow, it could allow Russian forces to move into the pro-Russian breakaway state of Transnistria. The fear is that if that's allowed to happen, Russian forces would move along Moldova's eastern border and potentially reach its capital "within days." Guest: Vlad Lupan, former Moldovan Ambassador to the UN, now adjunct professor at New York University Producer: Anne Barker
