UN top court begins hearings on Israel's humanitarian aid obligations

Radio National Breakfast — Separate stories podcast - Een podcast door ABC listen

The United Nations' top court has begun five days of hearings to examine allegations that Israel violated international law by refusing to allow humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip. Representatives for Gaza and the West Bank are among the first to address the International Court of Justice at the Hague, and at least 40 nations will give evidence later this week. In December, the court was asked to judge Israel's obligations to facilitate aid to Palestinians. Since then, Israel has cut all aid into Gaza, saying it will continue to do so until Hamas releases all remaining hostages.   Guest: William Schabas, Professor of International Law at Middlesex University Producer: Anne Barker
