Housing has emerged as a key battleground between the two major parties ahead of the election. In a direct pitch to voters worried about attaining the great Australian dream, the Coalition is promising unprecedented tax-deductible mortgage interest payments for first home buyers. If re-elected, Labor says it will spend $10 billion to build 100 thousand new homes within a decade, and expand a program allowing first home home owners to avoid lenders mortgage insurance with just a 5 per cent deposit.
