Thornhill tips the valet. “Here, thanks,” says Roger. “Thank you,” says the valet, as he leaves. “Pleased to meet you, Mister Kaplan.” Roger and his mother are alone in the hotel suite. “Hm,” says Roger, “Now isn’t that the damnedest thing? I’m beginning to think no one in the hotel has actually seen Kaplan!” “Maybe he has his suits mended by invisible weavers,” replies Roger’s mother. Roger sighs at her, then removes his suit jacket.  “Let me see something,” says Roger, putting on Kaplan’s jacket. It’s too short for him. “I don’t think that one does anything for you,” observes his mother.  Roger holds up the pants in front of him. They’re also too short.  “Ah, that’s much better,” says his mother. “Obviously, they’ve mistaken me for a much shorter man,” says Roger. The phone rings.  “Should I?” asks Roger. “Certainly not!” replies his mother. Roger doffs Kaplan’s suit jacket. “Hold that,” he says to his mother. Roger picks up the phone. “Hello?” he says into the receiver. “It is good to find you in,” says Licht, on the other end of the call.
