What Comforts the Sheep the Most.

Psalm 23 says "Your rod and staff they comfort me" but why is a rod comforting? We hear so much about a rod being a form of discipline for children but a rod is actually a way of protecting the sheep! When a sheep sees a Shepherd with a rod - he feels totally comforted!
